Breaking News: Nigeria’s Simidele Adeagbo Makes History Finishing 20th After Day 1 of the Women’s Skeleton Competition

PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA (FEBRUARY 16, 2018) – Earlier Today, Nigeria’s Simidele Adeagbo competed in Day 1 of the Women’s Skeleton competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics and placed 20th after her first two runs. Adeagbo threw down one of the top push start times of the day (5.06 seconds) and a best down time of 54.19 seconds. Adeagbo is making history at the Winter Olympics as the first Nigerian, African and Black female to compete in the sport of Skeleton at the Olympics. She is also the first Nigerian athlete (male or female) to compete in the Winter Olympics.

Adeagbo will compete again tomorrow, Saturday, February 17. The Women’s Skeleton competition includes four heats over two days – Friday and Saturday – and the athlete with the quickest combined time over the four heats wins gold.


“I’m so excited to be at the Olympics representing Nigeria on the world’s biggest stage and can’t wait to get back out and compete again tomorrow,” said Simidele Adeagbo. “Ultimately, my journey is about breaking down barriers for future generations of athletes – especially young women everywhere – who are watching athletes like me push the limits through sport during the Games.”


Adeagbo’s achievements at the Winter Olympics cap off many firsts leading up to the Games; breaking significant barriers in sports when she officially qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in the Women’s Skeleton becoming the first Nigerian and African female athlete to compete in the Olympics in the sport. She is also the first Black female athlete to compete in the Skeleton in the Winter Olympics.
