This year’s FIFA World Cup kicked off in Russia with grand style, amidst the recent news to host the FIFA 2026 World Cup in North America, as a joint bid, which took place in Moscow yesterday, Wednesday. The World Cup being hosted in Russia giving Putin the chance to show to the world what Russia is made of, not with bombs or nukes, but how developed cities in the country are. For instance, it was reported that cities like Saransk ‘were sleepy outposts with decaying buildings’, but got attention, with construction work been done, before the start of the FIFA World Cup.
The World Cup Opening ceremony saw a performance from both local and international celebrities featuring stars Robbie Williams, Ronaldo Nazario and local Russian singer, soprano Aida Garifillinam. The master of ceremonies was former Real Madrid and Barcelona striker, Ronaldo Nazario of Brazil fame also (he won two World Cups in 1994 and 2002). “The inaugural game is always very symbolic; it’s the moment when you realise the time you have been waiting for the last four years, as a player and as a fan, has arrived. Nobody knows what will happen in the next four weeks but everyone is sure it will be memorable,” Ronaldo said.
Russia took on Saudi Arabia, beating them 5:0. The host country is topping the Group A table and expected to face Egypt and Uruguay in their next matches. Russia thrilled the over 78 thousand crowd watching at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, from the 12th minute of play, with a goal from Gazinskiy. Cheryshev, Dzyuba, and Golovin all scored in the match, with Cheryshev netting a double for the host team.
Haven enjoyed a thrilling first match from the host country, the second match of the tournament will see Egypt facing Uruguay tomorrow, Friday. Also tomorrow, Morocco will be facing Iran and Portugal playing Spain, in Group B.
On Saturday, 16th of June, France will be playing Australia and Peru meeting Denmark in Group C of the FIFA World Cup. Also, Argentina will be playing Iceland and Croatia meeting Nigeria in Group D.
On Sunday, 17th of June, Costa Rica will be playing against Serbia and Brazil playing Switzerland and Group E. Lastly for that day, Germany will be facing Mexico from Group F.
On Monday, the 18th of June, Sweden will be playing South Korea in Group F. Also, Belgium will be playing against Panama and Tunisia will be playing England in Group G.
On Tuesday, 19th, Colombia will be facing Japan and Poland playing against Senegal in Group H.
